Hello, and welcome to Future Fields. This is a podcast on how innovative technologies
are designing the future of agriculture. My name is Jocelyn Long, and today’s topic is the
importance of technology in farming. How can we produce more food for the increasing
population while demanding the same resources? Let us dig in!
Agriculture today is unlike the old days when individuals used plows and their hands to
work the soil. Agriculture has increasingly adopted technology to improve efficiency,
sustainability, and productivity. My strong opinion? To meet the growing population's increasing
food needs and sustain them sustainably, it is crucial to adopt Agricultural Technology or
AgTech.
Let us look at a few examples. First, precision farming employs GPS and sensors to
observe attributes such as the soil, water, and health of crops. This means that fertilizers and
water can be applied only on the specific areas requiring them and not on the entire large farm,
offering a more efficient solution regarding expenses. Second, drones are used for flying over
fields, identifying pests, and, in the case of agriculture, planting crops. Third, vertical farming,
which involves growing crops vertically in different tiers and controlled environments, is more
efficient in using space and resources and year-round production. These are some innovative
practices that are not merely concepts for the future production line but are already actively
practiced on farms today.
But how can you support this movement? The first change involves acquiring knowledge
about where your food is sourced and how it is being produced. Second is supporting farming
companies and farmers who have embraced the use of advanced technology. You can also support legislation promoting
allocating resources to promote AgTech through research and innovation. Every effort counts!
I am thrilled you are here with me on Future Fields, and I hope you will find our
conversations thought-provoking. If you enjoyed this episode, forward it to a friend and connect
